Catechetical School

Dear fellow parishioners,

The Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Catechitical School Program started this year on Sunday, November 2nd 2008, immediately following Holy Communion. Religious classes including a light snack are offered each week for Kindergarten students through the 12th grade. Approximately 15 to 18 students attend on a regular basis for about 1 hour.

The teaching staff has had the pleasure to hear positive comments from different parents about the class material. On many occasions children have gone home and told their parents about how excited they are to be in Catechitical School where they learn about their faith and get a chance to interact with each other.

New students are welcome and can register at any time. Please be sure to contact Athena Miller – Pre-K thru 2nd grade, Demetra Zervos – 3rd thru 6th grade Maria Melts – 7th thru 9th grade and Anthony Birozes – 10th thru 12 grade if you are interested.

After the Christmas and New Year’s holidays classes will resume on Sunday, January 11th.

Background - Father James

Fr. James (Iakovos) was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by His Eminence Alexios,
Metropolitan of Atlanta on July 18, 2004, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox
Church in Maitland, Florida (Orlando).  A 2004 graduate of Holy Cross Greek
Orthodox School of Theology, Brookline, Massachusetts, Fr. James had been ordained to the Holy Diaconate on August 24, 2003 by His Eminence Isaiah, Metropolitan of Denver.  Prior to receiving his MDiv, Fr James had received a Master degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1985.  His undergraduate studies were at Wheaton (Illinois) College, where he majored in Political Science.

Father James has served as a Regional Manager for Texas Special Olympics, an Executive Director for Campus Life in upstate New York, taught at the High School level and worked in the ticket office of the Dallas Mavericks.  Having played College Basketball, he maintains his interest in sports both as spectator (baseball is his favorite) and participant (golf).  Fr. James's favorite teams are all the Atlanta local pro teams and especially the University of Georgia athletic teams.  He loves the New York Times crossword puzzles, reading National Review  and reading biographies and the writing of Georgia native, Flannery O'Connor.  He has been married to Anne since June of 1987 and God has graced them with two wonderful daughters in Caitlin Lise (born June 1998) and Melanie Anne (born Thanksgiving 1999).  Through the years the family has had a large menagerie currently limited to two cats (Leo and Serene) and a dog, Jake.
